OK Man Ordered To Pay Child Support Despite Not Being Father

Thomas said he had no reason to question it before he did, but, because he missed the deadline, the judge ordered him to pay around $500 a month in child support, plus, nearly $15,000 in back support plus interest – all for a child that is not his.

Though he knows it won’t help him, Thomas says he plans to fight the law in hopes of keeping other men from suffering the same fate.

This is a pretty interesting case. He is clearly the father (I think it’s dangerous to place too much stock in the biological aspect), but it also relies on the father admitting “guilt”. The law may define father based on the name on a birth certificate, but he could claim that he was simply helping the mother out. If the cost of fraud (assuming the state would even pursue such a case) is less than the cost of child support…

Since he’s clearly trying to not be the father, I wonder if he could move away from Oklahoma. I’m sure there are plenty of states where he wouldn’t be treated as the legal father.

People problems are so frequently challenging and interesting. 🙂

PS: The CAPTCHA is silly. It presents numbers as words but refuses to accept words as answers.

A relative of mine had to pay child support for a kid conceived when his ex-wife had an affair and didn’t inform him. Somehow, the “war on women” types seem to think this is just fine.

BTW, I got the captcha wrong and the whole comment was lost the first time I typed it in!

I should have added: the child support requirement came even as paternity tests showed that the kid wasn’t his.
