Serendipity – and Horses

Bear with me while I set the stage ~

Years ago, I was quite enamored with The Nutcracker. So much that I had intended to make a different character from the ballet each year for the family ornament project. The character who sets Clara’s dream in motion is Herr Drosselmeyer, who is often portrayed with wild-hair and an eye patch.

Years ago, I got a dog who was deaf – and had only one eye (which barely functioned) Her hair was a bit unruly, owing in part to her Aussie/Sheltie lineage. As such, she ended up with the name Drosselmeyer (not that her name was used often, since she couldn’t hear it). I was VERY upset when she died, so much that I planned to avoid having any other dogs.

Here we are, several years on, with me having welcomed not just one but TWO new dogs ~ two dogs with whom you regulars know I am completely besotted.

Today, after D‘s golf game (best round he’s shot in a while), he and I went to lunch, did some shopping…eventually came home to just relax. After settling in, he started clicking through the channels. The Memorial apparently had a rain delay, so they weren’t showing anything interesting – so he decided to check out coverage of the Belmont Stakes.

As soon as he clicked over to ABC, they announced the number 7 horse: Drosselmeyer. He repeated the name, looked at me and said, “That’s a sign” Serendipitous, you might say.

He headed down the road to our local OTB parlor to place his wager (in fact, he bet everything he had won earlier at golf), and came home to watch the race.

Drosselmeyer ran a perfect race, winning easily. So, D headed back to pick up his winnings.

After that ridiculously coincidental win, I shudder to think how much he’ll wager if there is ever a horse named Tango & Cash.
