What’s in a Name?

My sweet boyfriend went for his usual Saturday golf game – and came home with puppies!

Pups

There’s really no relation to the events, he didn’t win them in the game or anything, but it was a big surprise.

Those of you who know me (or have read this blog since the beginning) know that I had not planned on ever getting another dog. However, time and patience mellow all wounds, including the pain of losing a beloved pet. D has been a big factor in that, with his dog (who died just a few months back) and with his character filled cats. Even the stupid bird helped make the case with her affectionate greetings and silly beak kisses.

So we looked, mostly casually but sometimes in earnest. (Those dogs, having lived in the wild for a while, had most likely had to depend on small animals for their meals. That was not a good fit for a home with a bird – which they tried to eat – and a cat, who they didn’t meet) D kept an eye out, watching the ads online and in the paper, and occasionally there would be something that caught our eye. Then he saw an ad for this litter, this batch of mixed up pups that had parentage of both of our dear and recently departed pets. Half Aussie, like my little deaf/blind fuzzball, and half blue heeler, like all of his dogs since “The Road Warrior” came out.

So we went, we looked – I fell in love. I wanted all 5 of them. So cute, so sweet, so adoptable. D being more pragmatic suggested we think about it for a bit. And think I did, couldn’t stop thinking about them, in fact. Could we handle a pup? Could we handle more than one? Are we ready for the 12-15 year commitment and expense?

The timing wasn’t perfect, but the pups were. So there you go. He walked in from his golf game with the one on the left under his arm – and there was much rejoicing. I quickly took him outside knowing that he would be excited and not wanting to deal with cleaning up a mess first thing. As we were running around the yard I glanced over at the door, and there was D with the one on the right in his arms – and there was much laughing and rejoicing.

Two is perfect. They are having a grand time running and wrestling and exploring the yard. They are outside dogs, and will mostly be outside going forward, so it is good that they simply curl up together and sleep at night. I was fully expecting to spend the night dealing with the incessant whining of new puppies, in a new home, left in a yard. What a joy to find them so well adapted and so well behaved.

So now – the point of this post in the first place. I need names. I like pair names, as they are brothers and came to us together. I also like “ethnic” names, which in this case is all Australia. At this point the poor things are going by “One Mask & Big Boy”, and D has threatened “Tater & Skeeter”. Help me save them from that fate.

We had dinner at Outback last night and I perused the menu for ideas while I enjoyed my Wallaby Darned (mmm, yummy) and came up with “Kiwi & Bonzer”. D was thinking perhaps “Bandit” for the big guy with masks over both eyes. I could live with “Bandit & Bonzer”, I guess. Still, I am looking for suggestions. These guys are going to be stuck with it a long time, I’d like to get it right 🙂

UPDATE: D‘s new suggestion, “Butch & Sundance”

UPDATE: I’m not digging “Butch & Sundance”. Dogs names always get shortened & I have a feeling Sundance would become Sunny – which is much too girly. It’s bad enough that, having had only female dogs for so long, I keep getting my pronouns messed up and referring to them as “she”.

Maybe “Jake & Elwood” (At least Woody is a boys name…though it does call to mind that dipstick from Cheers)

UPDATE: “Tango & Cash” it is.
