Basic Math

I work for a payroll company – lots and lots of numbers, lots and lots of employees with questions. One in particular who I don’t usually mind dealing with because, unlike many of them, he is generally polite.

But he is frustrating – especially today. He doesn’t think we paid him correctly a couple of weeks ago, and we have been going around and around this week. I went through all the worksheets with him and he agrees that the hours we paid him for are correct. He agrees that the rates he was paid at are correct. But he is unwilling to accept that the total is correct, swears he got shorted $100 somehow. If the hours and the rates are right, how can the total not be?

Here are the figures:

  Total: 715.08

How does he get over $800 from that?

    Just for grins, I checked the math. Assuming overtime is at 1.5x, I get the same total.

    Do you suppose he would accept it if I told him the math had been double checked by an engineer?
