Surprises

I have just been IM-ing with an old friend. Nice conversation, a little healthy debate - he and I are very different in our opinions.

But then he sent me this link, and said "expresses my opinion totally"

Then the conversation went mostly like this:

me:really - you think that?
friend: absolutely
friend: they've had saddam since the start of the war
me: wow
friend: bush's number went down
friend: BAM - look, we caught saddam
friend: numbers back up again
[snip]
me: [snip]...you really believe that?
me: you're not just - - - -ing me?
friend: it's all a conspiracy
friend: they'll announce the capture of osama during the convention
I am shocked and a bit dismayed that I know someone who really believes that - I figured when people said stuff like that they were just joking - 'cause it's too outrageous for anyone to actually believe.

I won't out him here, but he may out himself in the comments.

p.s. Yes, I still consider him a friend - I think he is way off base with this one - but he's still a great guy.

oh, sure, the chance i may get a couple of extra hits to my crap little blog. bring the personal conversations on the blog. geeeez, is nothing sacred anymore?

I've herd this from people before, and I don't think it's too unconceivable. I do not believe Saddam was part of it but I would not be too upset if we found out later that they had been trailing Osama in an effort to get intelligence and yes then they conveniently capture him. I don't think it's wrong either. Politics is strategy and with the nation so polarized you've got to have some 'things' on your side.

Dude, it's politics not personal. And I didn't say who it was I had the exchange with...

Heck, I'm still trying to process the conversation myself.

Are ya' mad at me?

You could've posted it from the other side on your blog - "I was IMing with this girl, and she actually doesn't believe it's possible that Bush has timed these reports for the greatest political gain...."

I think it's interesting how many seem to many Bush out to be a villain of sorts - - let's look at the big picture here and recall the news (not just from FOX news, but also liberal media sources) If we had had Saddam since the beginning - - could we have pulled off hiding him in a hole and none of it leaking out? People please! ;)

As for Osama - - I think we have a general idea where he is but not an exact location - - not like what Clinton had during his administration when he lost bin Laden about a dozen times cause he was "busy" doing other things and couldn't make a decision of that magnitude.

Of course this is just my political opinion ;)

and the government is so forth coming with information. who said they kept him in that hole?

Posted by: friend at April 27, 2004 12:39 AM

Since you think "we had him since the start of the war" where do you think we kept him? Motel 6?

As for the government being forth coming - - they are on so many issues - - but when it comes to tracking down murderous tyrants, terrorists and for the sake of national security there are certain things we, as the American public and society of the world, don't need to know about until after - - if we know it all then so do all the bad guys - - and people who think we need to know everything the government is doing is simply kidding themselves

motel 6? now you're being ridiculous. there's no motel 6's in iraq. sure, there's the sheraton and hilton, but i doubt any hotel 6.

i don't want to know everything the government is doing. for all i know, they're torturing the hell out of the captors in guantanamo bay. i personally don't care. i just observe. i read the news and wait for the reponse by the government. it happened with clinton (lewinsky news stuff followed by a strike on a terrorist camp), and it happened with bush (his approval rating took a dip and they announced the capture of hussein).

is this all coincidence? maybe not. does it raise an eyebrow of somebody who isn't blinded by a political party? maybe so.

i just observe and analyze.

I think it is highly unlikely that our government could keep that sort of thing a secret. You have to remember there would be several people involved, many of them young soldiers, and no one would mention it to their buddies? No one person in the chain would call up their mom and say "hey, we got Osama last night - but don't tell anyone"? Not likely.

Back during WW Storm (the first Gulf War) my ex (the Air Force pilot) was sent on a top secret mission. I later found out that it was this big deal because no military aircraft from a western nation had landed in this particular country in 50 years. They were trying to keep their support low-key, and we were trying to keep the technology they were sharing a secret. They were flying in in the middle of the night to maintain the secrecy.

So, he is leaving on a mission that he can't talk about. Says he won't be able to talk about it afterward, either.

And when they land, the CNN crews are waiting for them, with cameras and spotlights, wanting to do interviews.

I wish the government/military were better able to keep tactical information from us. I see no reason for reporting where our units are and what their plans are to 'deal with' a given situation. If we know, the enemy knows - why give them a heads up?

I know we aren't able to keep things like this under wraps. If we could, why would the adminstration have released the Saddam information when it did - on a Sunday morning? Worst possible time for press coverage. They could've waited till the middle of a big TV event (broken into Friends, say ) and gotten some serious bang.

the first gulf war was a media clusterf*ck [HA, I CENSORED MYSELF SO YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO!]. saddam watched cnn and they knew it. cnn was giving out troop coordinates left and right. for all we know, the info was leaked to cnn by either saddam's minister of info who may have caught wind of it or the country he was flying to or even the us military.

all it took was a box of cigars and cheap bottle of vodka to get any kind of info you needed during that war.
