It's like, You Know...

I tuned into the local talk radio station on my way home tonight, and heard the end of an interview with one of our state senators, Thayer Verschoor. Unfortunately, I have no idea what his message was because I was far too distracted by his conversational style.

He couldn't put together a thought without "like", "I mean" and especially "you know" - sometimes several in one sentence. So he would say, I mean, something like, you know, how, you know, this like bill would, you know, I mean, get passed. Ouch! These are verbal affectations that made him seem less intelligent than the average adult, though he would have been right on target if he wanted the 12-15 year old vote.

Yes, he's a Republican, so I'm certain I hold him to a higher level of expectation. I imagine (and hope) he is probably much more polished in his writing style, as I assume he is when giving a prepared speech. Still, I can't help but wonder, in a job where the message is so important, and he is so handicapped in delivering his, how did he get elected?
