Things I Love – 21

On 02/21/2010, in Happy, Phoenix, pictures, by Vox

I love the pattern revealed when this tree was cut down.

StumpI discovered it one rainy morning while walking the dogs. I was fascinated by all the individual rings, and the colors were so rich when it was wet. I thought a creative person could slice apart discarded trunks and make interesting furniture.

I got this picture of it a few days later, but it was dry so it literally pales in comparison. I had planned on going back and getting a nice, deeply saturated shot – but when I went back, they had ground all the stumps at the park. Timing…

So, it’s a shot of something I loved – but I’m not crazy about this weak representation of it.

Things I Love – 20

Thank YouI love a genuine attitude of gratitude.

My niece works with a school funding organization. When one of her schools needed books for the students, they set up a “Wish List” on Amazon. They needed multiple copies of several titles, including “To Kill A Mockingbird“. That is a book I agree all young people should read, so I bought them a few. (And “The Diary of Anne Frank“, for the same reason)

Rather than the form letter asking me for more which I get when I make other charitable donations, St Edward School sent me this hand drawn card. Inside was another drawing depicting the elements of the text, and a note of thanks which expressed why they enjoyed this particular novel and what they learned from it.

You can bet I’ll be contributing to their next book drive.

Soap

I love the Argan Oil soap from Eden Allure.

I am just finishing up my argan oil with grapefruit bar, and I’m about to start on this lavender version. Yummy, earthy scents.

I first heard about this product (and argan oil in general) from Nat Neagle. She was so thrilled with the effect it had on her skin, including her acne, that I had to give it a try. So glad I did, my skin is my friend again.

And every time I wash my face it feels like a trip to the spa :-)

Yeah, I’ll Get Right On That

On 02/18/2010, in peeves, shopping, work, by Vox

A few weeks ago, some bozo (or bozos) forged checks on our business account. WalMart, having apparently hired people who ingested large amounts of lead in childhood to work in their money center, cashed several of them. Obvious forgeries, no I.D. required, the endorsements on the back didn’t even match the payee on the front, at different locations (or I’d have thought an employee was in on it).

Our bank recognized them as frauds right away and did not pay them, sending them back to WalMart. They gave us a letter to present in case the incidents came back to haunt us.

Last week we received a letter from a “collection agency” that said they were representing WalMart in recovering the funds. From us. I sent them the bank letter, as well as pointing out how easily the fraud should have been to spot.

Today I received a letter that said “In order to assist us in preventing further forged checks from being authorized, please complete the enclosed affidavit, and provide us the information requested”

Here is the information they requested:

  • Notarized affidavit

  • Driver’s license and a photocopy of your drivers license
  • Whether the account is jointly held
  • Include your “PASSWORD”. Typically, your “mother’s maiden name” is used

I’m wondering if it is even legal for them to ask for that. My password…are you kidding me?!?

Sure, I’m going to send that right over.

FrappeI love coffee

I love chocolate

I love finding new things

I love finding new ways to enjoy coffee & chocolate.

So, when I walked into McDonald’s today and saw this new (at least to me) drink, “Frappe”, I just had to try it. Bad idea – because it was fantastic and now I’m hooked.

It is what a Starbucks Frappuccino wishes it were…but larger…and cheaper.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Definitely love ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Bella

I love that my office is dog friendly.

I wish that my dogs were office friendly, maybe soon.

As it is, we have the occasional Dachshund or two, and this new baby that our bookkeeper just adopted. It’s pretty hard to stay stressed out with a tiny little fuzzy face staring up at you.

I love old photo albums.
Albums

And having somewhere to post the pics after I scan them.

I wonder if kids growing up now will have the same joy on finding these old treasures, flipping through page after page of frozen, forgotten memories. Their whole lives are captured and stored digitally, perhaps that will make those memories more easily accessible… so will they ever get this burst of happy nostalgia?

For me, going through my mother’s old albums has always been one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon.

BabyS

I love my step family

This gorgeous baby is the latest addition.

Just over a decade and a half ago, my mom married an amazing man. A man brave enough to take on our enormous family, and all the extra work it involves. A man with three daughters of his own. I am so enjoying seeing them as they’ve grown and started families of their own. Including this precious new angel.

The Boys

I love my Valentines!

My sweet boyfriend and the amazingly-perfect-for-us pups that he picked out for me.

I never thought I would be able to open my heart up to more pets after the heartbreak of losing my old dogs, but D showed me how much better it would be with dogs in our life – and helped me feel vulnerable enough to accept the unbelievable amount of love they give.

He is so many things I never knew I wanted in a man, and now I can’t imagine how I’d survive without them.

Flowers

I love these trees.

I have no idea what they are, but I see them all over the city. They are just a burst of happy white flowers, I can’t help but smile when I see them. They seem to also be a haven for the bees, if you get up close you can see how alive the blooms are with activity. Glorious.

Not sure it would be a great choice for my yard, though, as it seems to leave quite a mess below – but I sure am glad there are homeowners willing to put up with that so I can enjoy them :-)

I love happy surprisesZune

D’s truck was broken into. They stole some tools, destroyed his steering column trying to hot wire it and, we thought, took his Zune.

It turned out that the steering column cost less to fix than we expected. The tool set they stole was old and incomplete so, though an expense we’d rather avoid, they were due to be replaced anyway.

And the Zune, which is loaded with all of D’s favorite MP3s, turned up at home a few days later.

Life is full of happy surprises.

Bonus: Live version of the MoZella track
