I need new clothes. This is not a secret, I have needed new clothes for a very long time. The bits & pieces I pick up grudgingly as the need arises are just not working, leaving me with a pseudo-uniform of baggy trousers & t-shirts. Blah. There shouldn’t be any trick to it, clothes are fairly standard – everyone wears them, right? But…

I hate shopping!

I hate shopping with the white hot fury of a thousand suns. Of all potential types of shopping, clothes shopping is at the very bottom.

My suddenly rich/won the lottery dreams do not involve fancy homes & flashy cars, they involve a house keeper and a personal shopper (neither of which I ever really have to deal with, because then I have to think about cleaning & shopping . Blargh.)

How wonderful to just know that every 6 months my closet would update with fresh stuff for me to wear, and never think about. I don’t want to pick styles, I don’t want to choose colors, I don’t want to try on any of that crap

The thing is, I don’t need (or want, for that matter) fancy, expensive outfits. The stuff sold at WalMart, Target, JC Penney…whatever, is just fine, but they don’t have personal shoppers at that price point.

So here is my business idea for those of you who actually enjoy the whole shopping experience: Personal shopper for the busy or cranky or fashion challenged middle class woman. Any store manager worth their salt, particularly in this economy, would offer you a discount for guaranteed sales (especially sales that don’t require their employees time & attention). I would gladly pay a bit over retail for not dealing with the whole ordeal. Anyone who has an eye and is sufficiently organized should be able to make a small but tidy profit on each client. One meeting to get my measurements, evaluate my closet, ascertain my style preference, set a budget – and you just deliver my stuff two or three times a year. I give ya’ a check.

Win/Win/Win

Seemed like a big age difference, but I am guessing.

This is how their visit went:

*crash*
“Didn’t I tell you not to touch nuthin?”
“yaa”

A few more steps, *crunch*
“Didn’t I tell you not to touch nuthin?”
“yaa”

Over and over, all around the store. Step, step, step – *crinkle, crunch, crash, boom*
“Didn’t I tell you not to touch nuthin?”
“yaa”
“yaa”

I wanted to go up to her and say, “Lady, he clearly knows you said it – perhaps you should explain what it MEANS!”

I had noticed, and chuckled over, this warning slipped in amongst others in the user manual of my other guns. When I came across it again, I just had to share it with you.

DANGER: This product is not intended for use by criminals, for use in the commission of crimes or for any other wrongful purpose. Such uses constitute a misuse of the product and have a high likelihood of serious bodily injury or death for the criminal, the wrongdoer, law enforcement officers and/or innocent bystanders.

I can just imagine the legal department parsing the language on that one.

(And, yes, we also got a safe. We may get another one at some point but this one will work for now)

Almost as hard to get my hands on the Taurus 738 TCP as it is to get the .380 ammunition it fires. Fortunately, I was able to find both today (thanks to D‘s tireless efforts)

I had been looking at several of the smaller guns for more practical carrying in certain situations (like running with the dogs) but was unsure due to the dearth of ammo available. Still we looked, and researched – well, D mostly did the research…and the looking. The Bersa Thunder, while clearly a sweet little boomstick which gets fantastic reviews, is just a bit too big. Even the Concealed Carry version (love the grips) is not far enough removed size-wise from my PT111 to be worth the investment. (Though D did find a great deal on the Bersas from a dealer in our neighborhood)

The Ruger LCP, also sweet though with slightly more mixed reviews, was just a bit too small & light. Although I have to admit the idea of carrying one of the <s>pink</s> raspberry ones does make me smile, I wanted something a bit more…..there.

Enter the TCP, which is itty-bitty, but not too. It is just enough more substantial to give me that warm fuzzy feeling. It has several of the features found on my larger Taurus; key lock, loaded chamber indicator, wide, smooth trigger, bullet drops down through the grip when ‘unloading’. The TCP also comes with 2 magazines and a belt pouch, whereas the LCP comes with 1 magazine and no type of holster.*
That makes the Taurus almost $50 worth of better deal

UPDATE: In case you are wondering “Why?” ((Hat Tip Exurban Kevin)

*Cabela’s does have a deal going on the LCP that includes an extra clip & a Nemisis pocket holster

I have fallen quite in love with the handguns from Kahr Arms. Unfortunately they are ridiculously expensive (not as expensive as the Kimber guns that D finds himself partial to), though the reviews I’ve found certainly make the Kahr seem worth every penny.

I also get a warm, fuzzy feeling from the Ruger SR9c – which is a bit less pricey…but it sure seems to be tough to find. (Should’ve gotten one at the Gun Show, I guess) Might take me a while to get used to a gun with a safety again.

Next on the list, Bersa Thunder Ultra Compact Pro. Much cheaper, also much harder to find. (Should’ve gotten one at the Gun Show, I guess)

D seems fine carrying his Ruger for now, but my S&W is completely impractical for me to tote around.

What do you carry and why did you choose it?
UPDATE: After some shopping today, two new serious contenders on the list. Taurus PT111 and Springfield XD. I’d like to get my carry piece soon, but don’t want to rush it. More research…

Unfortunately it seems that the local gun ranges don’t have any of my candidates available for rent

There is a Smart & Final in my neighborhood. I usually pass it at least once a day, and it is always packed. Always. The parking lot is consistently full, people are forever coming and going with their overloaded carts.

So I thought I’d check it out. After all, there must be some killer deals to warrant that kind of business. Right? Wrong.

I couldn’t find any deals worth noting, let alone making a special trip for. In the same range as the Safeway and Fry’s around the corner. Certainly not as good as the WalMart Superstore down the street. Not even in the realm of the Costco a few blocks down. So what is it?

I checked their restaurant supply items, which lacked both selection and bargains. Considering that half a block away is a large restaurant supply store with more square footage of low priced supplies than the entirety of the Smart & Final, that can’t be it.

So, are they selling something under the table? Is there a secret handshake that cuts the prices in half? Perhaps if you whistle the right tune they bring out “the good stuff” from a back room?

Anyone?
