Smitten

I have fallen quite in love with the handguns from Kahr Arms. Unfortunately they are ridiculously expensive (not as expensive as the Kimber guns that D finds himself partial to), though the reviews I’ve found certainly make the Kahr seem worth every penny.

I also get a warm, fuzzy feeling from the Ruger SR9c – which is a bit less pricey…but it sure seems to be tough to find. (Should’ve gotten one at the Gun Show, I guess) Might take me a while to get used to a gun with a safety again.

Next on the list, Bersa Thunder Ultra Compact Pro. Much cheaper, also much harder to find. (Should’ve gotten one at the Gun Show, I guess)

D seems fine carrying his Ruger for now, but my S&W is completely impractical for me to tote around.

What do you carry and why did you choose it?
UPDATE: After some shopping today, two new serious contenders on the list. Taurus PT111 and Springfield XD. I’d like to get my carry piece soon, but don’t want to rush it. More research…

Unfortunately it seems that the local gun ranges don’t have any of my candidates available for rent :-(

Sweet Deal

Just found a nice deal at Wendy’s:
Buy a Frosty key tag for $1 and get a Jr Frosty free…every time you make a purchase at Wendy’s for the rest of the year.

So I bought one for me.

And one for the boss.

And one for the bookkeeper.

Because an office full of creamy chocolaty dairy goodness is a happy office :-)

There is a Smart & Final in my neighborhood. I usually pass it at least once a day, and it is always packed. Always. The parking lot is consistently full, people are forever coming and going with their overloaded carts.

So I thought I’d check it out. After all, there must be some killer deals to warrant that kind of business. Right? Wrong.

I couldn’t find any deals worth noting, let alone making a special trip for. In the same range as the Safeway and Fry’s around the corner. Certainly not as good as the WalMart Superstore down the street. Not even in the realm of the Costco a few blocks down. So what is it?

I checked their restaurant supply items, which lacked both selection and bargains. Considering that half a block away is a large restaurant supply store with more square footage of low priced supplies than the entirety of the Smart & Final, that can’t be it.

So, are they selling something under the table? Is there a secret handshake that cuts the prices in half? Perhaps if you whistle the right tune they bring out “the good stuff” from a back room?

Anyone?

The Price of Vice

I stopped at Circle K on my way to work and ended up in line behind a smoker.

He bought two packs of cigarettes and a generic bottle of water.

The total was nearly $20!

$20 – to smoke? I don’t see how people can afford to light up.

And I thought my caffeine addiction was expensive.

Soap

I love the Argan Oil soap from Eden Allure.

I am just finishing up my argan oil with grapefruit bar, and I’m about to start on this lavender version. Yummy, earthy scents.

I first heard about this product (and argan oil in general) from Nat Neagle. She was so thrilled with the effect it had on her skin, including her acne, that I had to give it a try. So glad I did, my skin is my friend again.

And every time I wash my face it feels like a trip to the spa :-)

Yeah, I’ll Get Right On That

A few weeks ago, some bozo (or bozos) forged checks on our business account. WalMart, having apparently hired people who ingested large amounts of lead in childhood to work in their money center, cashed several of them. Obvious forgeries, no I.D. required, the endorsements on the back didn’t even match the payee on the front, at different locations (or I’d have thought an employee was in on it).

Our bank recognized them as frauds right away and did not pay them, sending them back to WalMart. They gave us a letter to present in case the incidents came back to haunt us.

Last week we received a letter from a “collection agency” that said they were representing WalMart in recovering the funds. From us. I sent them the bank letter, as well as pointing out how easily the fraud should have been to spot.

Today I received a letter that said “In order to assist us in preventing further forged checks from being authorized, please complete the enclosed affidavit, and provide us the information requested”

Here is the information they requested:

  • Notarized affidavit

  • Driver’s license and a photocopy of your drivers license
  • Whether the account is jointly held
  • Include your “PASSWORD”. Typically, your “mother’s maiden name” is used

I’m wondering if it is even legal for them to ask for that. My password…are you kidding me?!?

Sure, I’m going to send that right over.

Toys

I am loving these Hol-ee Rollers I got for the puppies.

They may be the most perfect toys ever. They chase them, pounce on them like cats, toss them in the air, prance around carrying them in their mouths…

If we put treats in them, the pups are occupied for ages.

I’ve seen them at PetsMart for $6.99, but we got ours from Ryan’s Pet Supply for $2.75.

(Yes, I still hate the experience of shopping at Ryan’s warehouse. In fact the only time I don’t get completely frustrated there is when D is with me. But their prices are SO much better than the other pet stores….)

Mom’s old laptop decided to give up the ghost this month, as well. I think it was older than my old desktop, and that’s 7 or 8 years. That is a good long life for a computer, especially one that gets hauled on various vacations every year. So, back to Fry’s to buy a third computer in 2 months. They need to set up a frequent buyer program for me LOL (at least I didn’t have to pay for this one)
I originally had my eye on another Toshiba, which is the brand she previously owned. They had a great deal on a really nice machine. Once we got there though, D (who is a deal locating fool) spotted an Acer for $399. Almost all the same specs, but minus the webcam. You know, Mom really doesn’t need a webcam :-P I called my brother-in-law for confirmation, since he is our hardware guru & I am unfamiliar with Acer as a brand. He gave that laptop a thumbs up so that is the one I got.
(D has a friend who has been looking for a laptop, as well, so he called to tell him about the deal. Since the friend was out of town, we put one on hold, with a wireless mouse)
I knew setting up the computer, especially with Vista, would take time – so I decided to just take care of that before I deliver it to her. The more I played with it, the more I liked it. Very happy with the choice, and I think she will be, too…especially at the reduced price. The touchpad is very sensitive, though, so I am glad we set a mouse aside for D’s friend. Mom uses a corded mouse so she will be fine.
After just a few hours, I am ready to give the Acer a thumbs up, as well.
The problem came when D’s friend sent his mother to pick up the computer that we put on hold – it wasn’t there. They said that they hold for 48 hours, and she drove all the way from Surprise to get it, so I was upset. I hate to think of her dealing with trying to sort it out. After about 30 minutes of her getting the run around, D talked to one of the salesmen on the phone and got it straightened out. They gave her one they had in the back *eye roll* Should not have been that difficult.
Cut to us reading the paper later where I see Fry’s has a sweet Toshiba on sale for $379. I would’ve just told her to grab that one instead and saved her the headache. *forehead slap*
UPDATE: Wow, what a rambling, disorganized post. Stream of consciousness… -)
