Things I Love – 21

I love the pattern revealed when this tree was cut down.

StumpI discovered it one rainy morning while walking the dogs. I was fascinated by all the individual rings, and the colors were so rich when it was wet. I thought a creative person could slice apart discarded trunks and make interesting furniture.

I got this picture of it a few days later, but it was dry so it literally pales in comparison. I had planned on going back and getting a nice, deeply saturated shot – but when I went back, they had ground all the stumps at the park. Timing…

So, it’s a shot of something I loved – but I’m not crazy about this weak representation of it.

Flowers

I love these trees.

I have no idea what they are, but I see them all over the city. They are just a burst of happy white flowers, I can’t help but smile when I see them. They seem to also be a haven for the bees, if you get up close you can see how alive the blooms are with activity. Glorious.

Not sure it would be a great choice for my yard, though, as it seems to leave quite a mess below – but I sure am glad there are homeowners willing to put up with that so I can enjoy them :-)

Wildflowers

I love wildflowers, especially in the desert.

I pass this house on my commute and this Springtime display always makes me smile.

Yummy on the side

I LOVE this dressing.

I don’t like fish, so when D is in a sushi mood, I get teriyaki chicken. At Mr Sushi, the meal comes with a large salad and this amazing dressing. I have no idea what is in it; sesame, cucumber…? I just know that when my salad is gone, I clean out the dressing dish with my fingers (much to D’s embarrassment)

I can’t help it, I’m obsessed!

(I don’t love that my camera battery was nearly dead, this shot is all fuzzy)

Going forward, it looks like our Arizona Blogger get-togethers may be bigger and more frequent – so…yay!

So far, we’ve kept to a few familiar restaurants: Sonora Brew House (which may be out of business which has changed names and is now Sun Up Brewery), Yard House, Four Peaks….

We should have more venues to choose from and I am trying to compile a list. I would love to hear from any of you with suggestions; where do you like to go and why? Let me know if they have great food, great service, great atmosphere, great beer on tap, great beer in general…whatever. If you happen to know whether they have a separate meeting area & WiFi, let me know that, too.

Mostly I’m looking in the Phoenix Metro Area, but would be interested to hear about your faves in Northern and Southern AZ, as well. We may just decide to take this show on the road.

Thanks!

Your Tax Dollars at Work

During our Blogapalooza, there was a mention of the light rail – and the public art installations connected to it. To which a few people said, “There’s art at the stations?”

Yes, and it all cost a pretty penny, too. Here is the lovely sculpture to be found at the 19th Ave & Camelback stop.

Remember that the next time you are complaining about the budget cuts for essential services like police, fire, education. . .

UPDATE: Here is more on this sculpture – and all the “METRO Public Art

Looking Up

On my walk with the puppies this morning, I learned something about my neighborhood.
There are flocks of parrots living here.

I’ve been here a dozen years or so and I have never seen them. Granted, I’ve never gone for a walk at 7:30 in the morning, either, so that could be part of it. Unfortunately, I still wouldn’t have noticed them if there hadn’t been a nice lady out walking her old (17 years!) dog. As we were chatting, discussing breeds and such, she looked up and pointed one of the birds out to me. It was gorgeous, bright green with bits of yellow and orange. She said there were bunches of them, she thought at least two ’separate’ flocks, and that they’d been there as long as she can remember.

As we continued on our way, I kept glancing skyward and sure enough, there they were, in many of the trees, on the electrical wires. Beautiful.

I wonder what else you morning people know about that the rest of us don’t…

BTW: I’ve been trying to find out what kind of parrots they are since we got back, but I’ve had no luck. Medium-sized with short tails. Anyone?

Dining Deals

You heard me say it before; Arizona sports teams will break your heart. Fortunately, they can also help fill your belly.
Two of the deals we’ve been taking advantage of:
Taco Bell’s Diamondbacks deal – If the Dbacks manage to score 6 runs, you can get 3 free tacos with the purchase of a drink the following day between 4 and 6 p.m.
Papa John’s Cardinals deal – Monday nights, Papa John’s sells a large pizza for $7.99. For every touchdown the Cards score, you get one topping free. Last night we got a large 5 topping pie for less than $9 . . . and it was mighty tasty :-)
[I believe that if the Cards actually manage to win, they double the number of free toppings - but what are the odds of that ;-) ]

Convertible Weather

The weather outside may be frightful in some parts of the country, but here in Phoenix it is still glorious. Perfect for putting the top down and hitting the road (especially now that gas prices have dropped)
If you don’t yet have your own convertible, why not consider giving yourself a nice little Christmas present.

This is the nicest 98 Corvette in Arizona. Or the nicest I have seen anyways it is garaged and only has 43k miles on it. Arctic white coupe LS1, 345hp, 6spd , rear window defrost, electronic dual comfort zone controls, 12 disc cd changer, memory package, dual leather power seats, tires only have 4k miles on them (BFGoodrich GForce TA KD’s) Rear: 295/35ZR 18’s – Front: 295/45ZR 17’s It took me 2 years to find this car and I love it. But I have only driven it a handful of times in the past 4 years and it just sits in my garage. It is time for someone who will enjoy it and drive it to have it. This is the one to come see, you won’t look any further I guarantee it.
$18,000

I’ve ridden in that car and I can tell you that it’s sweet.

Phil Gordon Is A Weenie

Yeah, I know that is common knowledge, but in case anyone was doubting it Gordon intends to remove all doubt.
UPDATE: I have just been reading some of the comments on that story, seems that I am not nearly the only one who thinks Gordon ought to consider working within a budget rather than turning into just another outstretched hand looking for a taxpayer funded bailout.
