Timing

How do you know when keeping your pet alive is just your own selfishness?

She is my sweet little baby, but I can't tell. Sometimes it seems like she is just completely miserable and the pain-killers are ineffective, sometimes it seems like there are still sparks there and she is happy to be with me. I don't know how to decifer the situation; I don't want to prolong her suffering, I don't want to jump the gun.

How does anyone know?

I have had to do it twice over the last few years and it is never easy. The decision always boils down to the animal's dignity. When they can no longer accomplish common tasks and their days are filled with frustration as well as pain, it is probably time. Our warm and supportive wishes go out to you.

I agree with Woods, but I've never been there. I think the rule of thumb is when they have no drive to do the things that used to make them happy. Toys, food, walks.
