Consumer Insanity

This store is opening here this Friday and they are expecting over 100,000 people in the first three days. No, that's not a typo, 100,000 people converging on a massive sporting goods store.

I love sporting goods/outdoor shops, especially now that I am a gun owner again, though I have never heard of Cabela's. What I do know about it, however, is that they invested a lot of time and money in this location - they are going to be there for a while. I've been looking forward to the opening since I heard they were coming, but I don't understand the need to rush over there and fight these opening day crowds. There aren't any grand opening specials until the Grand Opening - next month.

For those of you who live/work/or otherwise have to drive over there, the city of Glendale is implementing the 511 traffic system, call 'em up to get up to the minute information on traffic, delays & parking.

UPDATE: Apparently I am familiar with this store, the family has been shopping from their catalog for years...who knew?

OK, I get that it is a cool store, really I do. I have been looking forward to it myself but, as I said, it will be here for a while. Much like the insanity surrounding the Ikea opening here, I intend to avoid it - until the madness dies down.

I mean, if they were offering some sort of give away or...... but I can't imagine fighting the crowds for a shopping experience you can have 10 days later.

And I'm a girl - I do shopping.

Now that I know you're feelings, though, I will definitely be checking your site for a review next week. :-)

Don't bother...I try to make my pilgimages annual and I've already visited the one in Hamburg PA this year. It keeps it special.

So, will you keep your pilgrimages out of state, or will this one be on your agenda soon?

I should have tried that tactic with Ikea. I used to love them, even driving to CA just to shop there, now it's just another big box store. Well, a big box store with great swedish meatballs :-)

I see your update, good to know you really do know who they are. Because they are a catalog company their stores are few and far between, although each of them is huge. There are even plans to build hotels close because people will actually want to come and spend days at the store. I've never heard of a vacation to go to a store but apparently this store has a following.

Well, my Mom and siblings live in PA, so the Cabela's Pilgrimage is also an excuse to go visit them :) I still might have to visit the Glendale store on a future trip up to PHX.
