Scene Stealer

Well, it's no surprise to me that the early buzz has Philip Seymour Hoffman stealing MI3 from Tom Cruise. Hoffman is an amazing actor, Cruise would have trouble acting his way out of a paper bag.

It also isn't a surprise that test audiences applaud when Cruise gets his butt kicked in the film.

I know that the movie will bring in some major dollars. Just imagine how much better of a film it might have been with a different star.....

BTW: I was going to link to the Non Sequitur comic that said, basically, "For the love of God please quit casting Tom Cruise as the star in what might otherwise be good movies" (I had previously linked it here) but that particular comic is gone from their archives. January 21st is there, January 23rd is there - January 22nd? Nope. Curious. Could be because it is a Sunday strip, could be because Cruise is a big baby who likes to sue people.

UPDATE: Found it in French.

as usual we are in disagreement. if t.c. were such a awful actor why do they keep paying him multi-multi millions to do movies. i think he is a fine actor and a HUGE draw at the box office.

I do agree he is a draw at the box office, though for the life of me I can't figure out why. I don't think he continues to get cast due to his acting ability, which is sorely lacking, but because of that draw. His movies have averaged just shy of $100 million at the box office, putting him at #5 on the all time earners list.

But that says nothing about the quality of his acting, or the quality of the films.

Vanilla Sky sucked major a$$ and still managed to bring in $200 million worldwide. Eyes Wide Shut managed to grab $86 million.

Zonitics was talking about star salaries recently.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I think he's capable of some great moments, but he has a hard time sustaining a believable character for an entire movie. And I respect him, too, for taking some chances. He's played some very unlikeable characters in movies that you wouldn't necessarily expect to make a ton of movie. Has Tom Hanks done that? Has Harrison Ford? Has Mel Gibson? Having said all of that, I think there are times when he is absolute shit on-screen. I sometimes imagine a starving actor somewhere scraping together 10 bucks, going to see a Cruise movie, and looking up at the screen in disbelief, thinking, "I'm so much better than this clown..."
