Happy - 8

I stopped in to Taco Bell for dinner tonight (always make time for a healthy meal ) The man in line ahead of me wrote down his order...then answered the "for here or to go?" question with a gesture.....could he be deaf...?

So I signed to him, and he answered with a smile. I told him they were playing really old cheesy music, he said sometimes it is handy to be deaf. lol.

My skills are incredibly rusty but still, having the ability to chat with a person that most people can't, and having them appreciate the friendliness, makes me happy.

And you probably made him comfortable in an otherwise not so friendly or accomodating world. That "makes me happy" to be the sister of someone so kind!

That's so awesome! I didn't know you could sign. Jenny at www.ontopof-theworld.com also signs. She's from Australia and she uses pictures of the hand signals as the headings of each blog post in case you want to brush up. :)

Sign Language is very different in different parts of the world. Very frustrating, too. They had a chance to develop this truly universal language, and missed the boat. I think Australian sign is closer to British sign, which is very different from American sign. We actually have more in common with the French signers....

I went to a conference of Deaf Churches a few years ago, and they had a speaker from South America. He was signing Spanish Sign Language, then there was a translator signing in American Sign Language (ASL), then a translator who was voicing the speech from that. It was fascinating and beautiful to watch - but confusing, as well. Even across the states there is a lot of variation, trying to chat with someone from back east or Hawaii....ahhhhh!

I need to get back in practice though, somehow..
